Bolstered by winning, real performances from its leads, “Unpregnant” will delight as much as it stings, a sterling reminder of how many stories about this very subject are still demanding to be told. Mega-popular and mega-smart, Veronica has a tight-knit pack of girlfriends (that the other members of the foursome seem to operate with one brain is more than just a joke) and a devoted boyfriend (Alex MacNicoll). Too bad it’s Veronica. It was the No. The filmmaker, who just this year also debuted her long-gestating “Valley Girl” remake, also has a taste for upending occasional tropes, and some of her funny twists on genre-specific gags are truly inspired. After meticulously planning a road trip to New Mexico to do the deed, and finding out in short order that her trio of best pals are not up for the task (they’re much more interested in outing the owner of an, oops!, positive pregnancy test found in the school’s trash) and her sweet boyfriend Kevin might be an actual moron, Veronica turns to the only person who can help her: Bailey. All her writing should be read in Sarah Connor’s Terminator 2 voice over. I can be sort of flippant about it and say, ‘Oh it’s a classic abortion comedy.’ But really what I’m proud of is that it’s hard to define and it’s best for people to watch it rather than explain it.”. While “Unpregnant” initially approaches the legal complications Veronica faces — the same legal complications that power “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” — as more of a logistical hurdle, rather than an emotional or political one, the film does eventually work up to more pointed critiques about the flawed system. Veronica doesn’t need to navigate them on her own, either. The main thing that stuck out to me, especially the videos about women who had abortions, was how personal an experience it is. It’s frustrating and it feels like sometimes it’s bad faith as it’s not based on the content of the movie. Since then, I’ve been waiting for the right thing to make Haley come work with me and hang out with me again.

Mostly bored and entirely intrigued, the zany Bailey shoves Veronica into a (not totally hers) muscle car, and the duo hit the road in search of surgical-issued freedom. In celebration of Unpregnant’s relevant discussions, I asked Haley Lu Richardson about the role that changed her perspective on life the most. So when I saw the book it made sense to me that this was a way to talk about it. Goldenberg: Yes, I previously directed this film and there was this not particularly well-known actor who came in and blew everyone else out of the water. Goldenberg’s film does throw in a few shockers, including a subplot involving Sugar Lyn Beard and Breckin Meyer that is somehow both totally insane and hugely believable (especially for viewers paying attention to the religious themes that are littered throughout the film). Haley Lu Richardson: My agents called me and tried to explain the movie to me but, you know, it’s very unique and complex. Her character Veronica learns first hand the insane lengths women under 18 must go to in order to follow through with her choice to have an abortion by driving cross country with her ex-BFF Bailey (Barbie Ferreira). Goldenberg: I come from really low- budget filmmaking; before Lifetime I made even lower budget sci-fi and action films [for Asylum]. We worked together before, we have very nice history of escaping polygamy together in a film we did for Lifetime. Five Feet Apart might be the perfect introduction to Haley Lu Richardson. Their new film, “Unpregnant,” premiering Sept. 10 on HBO Max, is a big departure — it’s a comedy, but not an easy one to categorize.

Based on the book by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan (both of whom contributed to the script, alongside Goldenberg, Bill Parker, and “Sweet/Vicious” creator Jennifer Kaytin Robinson), Goldenberg’s film captures the chemistry between Richardson and Ferreira immediately. haleyluhoo: 1. Barbie Ferreira is so great in this film and the chemistry between the leads is so wonderful. “We have a tone you can’t easily point to another movie for. Since their first collaboration, Richardson has gone on to films like “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Columbus,” which earned her a Spirit Award nomination. But I have never fully gotten used to auditions in the last 10 years. It was like walking on a tightrope and it felt like I was falling off left and right. Was that challenging? But she also learns a lot about how she’s approaching her life and social circles. But Barbie is so much Bailey and what she is and brings to this character makes it 10 times more real and unexpected and not stereotypical.

That they will eventually find their way back to BFFship is the obvious pleasure of “Unpregnant,” which occupies the same space as other recent friendship-centric films like “Booksmart,” “Blockers,” and “The Edge of Seventeen” (also featuring Richardson). But while Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s comedy might sound like a lighter spin on Hittman’s earthy drama, the charming “Unpregnant” still earns its own hard truths alongside some very big laughs. Rachel Lee Goldenberg and Haley Lu Richardson first collaborated together on the 2013 Lifetime movie “Escape From Polygamy,” in which the rising star played a 17-year-old looking to leave a polygamous compound. That video got passed around and it was obvious she was Bailey. Everybody’s different and everybody sees the world through a different lens and you can’t even begin to understand how someone sees the world, but you can love them and respect that. I did a bunch of research and read articles and watched videos that were pro-life and pro-choice, and really wanted to get a broad handle on the different things that people genuinely feel and experience. And that all happened about a year before I was sent the book. They interested me, but also confused me as they were all trying to describe it on the call. Few of the beats that follow are particularly surprising — of course Veronica and Bailey are going to rekindle their friendship in fits and starts, obviously they’re going to meet some wacky new pals along the way, surely there will be horrible surprises that turn into funny gags — but Richardson and Ferreira are so delightful to watch zip through even the most predictable of paces, it’s hard to get mad at any of it.
