The story of Ree, a teenage girl charged with finding her bail-jumping father in order to save her family’s house, catches fire early and never cools down. The hideous ramifications of "crank" (methamphetamine) production, the modern moonshine, are so intensely conveyed that I sometimes could barely read on. Whether it's her reading of Ola Belle Reed's "High on a Mountain," the spiritual "Farther Along," the traditional "Ballad of Jessup Dolly," she and Blackberry Winter are spectacular. Determined to find him, dead or alive, Ree doggedly questions her father's relatives and associates, but everywhere she goes the message is the same: stay out of it or get hurt. Ree's father, a meth cooker, has gone missing while out on bail, but not before putting the house his three children live in up as collateral against his bond. "I always said they butchered the butchering scene," he says. It seems incredible that the people and communities the story focuses on could be that disenfranchised, and live their lives so differently from their fellow citizens, but it's entirely believable and a reflection and indictment of the times we live in.
