upper motor neuron disease

Motor neuron disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), occurs when specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord called motor neurons stop working properly. Upper motor neuron syndrome (UMNS) is common among TBI patients and often present bilaterally, unlike in stroke patients, in which unilateral dysfunction is more common. Upper motor neurons may stimulate or inhibit motor actions. This is known as neurodegeneration. Lower motor neuron loss, on the other hand, leads to muscle wasting with fasciculation, weakness, and reduced or loss of reflexes. Most people who develop this condition do not survive beyond three to four years from the start of symptoms, although some patients survive for up to ten years or more. That is, it consists solely of lower motor neurons. Familial ALS can be transmitted as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait. The other 15% cross within the spinal cord at the level they terminate and are carried within the medial corticospinal tract. By continuing you agree to the use of cookies. Thus, the quality of UMN paresis is spastic paresis or paralysis. The effects of MNDs are often devastating, and there is generally no cure. Finally, UMNs terminate not only on LMNs and interneurones, but also on other UMNs. The result is a slowly progressive weakness associated with upper motor neuron signs, such as spasticity, rigidity, and increased deep tendon reflexes. End-of-life issues need to be addressed early in the management of ALS and other severe MNDs. The condition can affect adults of all ages, including teenagers, although this is extremely rare. Some movement may be preserved, although…. Treatment of Slipped Disc ( Disc Prolapse ), A New Way Of Homeopathy Treatment of PCOS. Two broad approaches, central strategy and peripheral strategy, have emerged to treat the consequences of maladaptive torques. There are many theories, including exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals, infection by viral agents, immune mediated damage, premature ageing of motor neurones, and loss of growth factors required to maintain motor neurone survival and genetic susceptibility. The mechanisms that account for “selective” neuronal degeneration are uncertain. ALS is the main acquired or sporadic cause, presenting with UMN and LMN features, and is more common in men. If the disease is progressed to the bulbar palsy it can reduce the distress of the pt and slow down the dependence upon the machine or mechanical intervention which is introduced to support breathing.
