I did enjoy it, especially the performances, though it has a few flaws. R/HORROR, known as Dreadit by our subscribers is the premier horror entertainment community on Reddit. It felt like the story never really went past the premise/synopsis/trailer until like the last ten minutes and then suddenly things were easily wrapped up. At all. The mom watches her son change from a unique, strange child she loves to a super clean, neat, organized child she no longer recognizes. What I liked most though, was the ability of the movie to keep me guessing as to whether or not it is her child that is an imposter (who is just weird AF) or if she was actually just losing it (signaling with the empty pill bottles). Forgettable movie and was quite bored. I'm sure there's a lot of you in that group, as the press on this one has called it the scariest movie since Hereditary, 2019's first great horror film, etc. Look forward to more from this director. I hate that feeling. Google just keeps pointing me at the 2008 movie. There were too many similarities to The Monster and Babadook which both did a better job with the mother's guilt idea. Saw it a few days ago. The movie introduces subplots aimed at giving backstories to these characters but are completely dropped and forgotten about. Saw it at Sundance and didn’t like it. From there I also wish the abusive husband backstory was either fleshed out or cut way back. The downsides of the movie were the cliche neighbor that knows the truth, and the unexplained way she miraculously carried her somehow still living child out of the fairy den, where the only way out was the hole she sank in to. Soooo.....I'm here to piss on all the Cheerios. But it lets you wonder and I love this. I would’ve liked to see more focus on the actual folklore and for the hole itself to be more involved. The movie had some solid creepy moments and I think those of you who like psychological horror will find this worth a watch. I thought this was incredibly dull and bland save for the very impressive hole in the ground. I think she should have been a little less insane and they should have had a longer arc as a couple so the husbands interaction over the video would have had more weight. The mirrors reinforced this message to me: look into the mirror to be sure you are living the way you want to live and not the way others have told you. In fact, there were moments when a cheap jump scare would have made sense, such as at the beginning when the mother is looking for her son in the woods, but the film gracefully holds back from doing so. That's l'll I'm gonna say, as I really don't want to ruin anything for those of you who are excited about this movie. I appreciated the Irish folk take on the doppelgänger. There is no "discovery" moment because the mom figured out early on her son had been replaced. And I'm not sure if it was my download but the kid at the end, when he's lying in the car sort of gets a bit warped-y... it was subtle so I don't know if I got a bad copy, or if it was intended to make you think "OMG that's the doppelganger", same with blurry pictures she takes at the end, but her apartment is mirror-ridden... so, was he the doppelganger at the end? The whole thing, despite having a captivating female lead actress, just feels like a sketch. There are also comparisons being made to the Babadook that I don't think are accurate. I do agree however they left a lot of questions unanswered unless I missed them like what happened to the dad. I don't think the lady was a red herring, because it's revealed really early on what happened to her and her son. Uneventful. But I greatly enjoyed ted the caver and as above so below. I respect what you're saying, but I think it's a little bit of a stretch. The climax of the movie was underwhelming to say the least and my biggest issue with it is that it felt as if they were running low on budget so they decided to replace what could have been the most interesting part of the third act with a jump cut to some time later that basically undercut all of the tension the movie had. So this felt like I cozy ending I was excited and engaged for. Soon she finds herself spiraling into paranoia as she finds her son started to act very strangely. Personally I enjoyed the movie, it set a dark, serious tone throughout, without being too much. This is the second good horror film of 2019 that I've seen, after Us. The sombre, gloomy tone is excellent throughout and it holds tension well enough at points, and the performances are very good, but I found it falls rather flat in terms of plot and I too think it had an especially weak ending.
