Couldn't put it down! Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Wow. This is the central metaphor of this book, which posits that, in our age of multiple backgrounds and meanings, the image of the leader as a single, dominant figure--or even as someone who knows how to cultivate and wield the most influence--must broaden to encompass many people sharing leadership across perspectives to reach common goals. Impossible to put down. The drawings are bright and engaging. But worldviews can develop beyond dominance, toward what Drath calls relational dialogue or relational meaning-making. The simple, repetitive text makes for a fun read-aloud for storytime or sharing, and identifying the vivid images and strong colors provides an exciting concept learning experience for young readers. However, without ruining any of the storyline I think it ended too quickly and there were many unanswered questions. That idea is expanded upon here, interspersed with the fictional tale of the changing of the guard at the Zoffner Piano Company, which illustrates the book's main points. For the year it was published, 1953, I’m blown away at the depth that it handles depression, suicide, patriarchy, and the economic/social limitations women face. I did not enjoy this at all - I found all the characters unappealing (and not even in an appealing way..), and the themes of suicide and giving up relationships didn’t hit the mark for me. The simple, cumulative text adds a new object, and a new color, with each spread: a green trfe, a brown nut, a purple parrot, and an orange butterfly all appear, before a white cloud turns gray, a storm drenches the rock, and a rainbow forms. Through the story of a fictional piano company, Drath illustrates why this new notion of leadership is needed in order to face the challenges of the postindustrial information age. He changed the couple to a man and woman, made the suicide attempt (which opens the play) unsuccessful, and created a frighteningly honest character in Hester Collyer. If Drath's idea seems sound to the point of dullness, that's perhaps because it has been, in some incarnation or another, the crux of every new book about leadership for the past 10 years: the age of the single, great lone leader has passed into a new age where dialogue, collaboration, and cross-perspectives are more important than ever. Such great escapism. Her novels are the perfect summer reads, with their beautiful bright summer-y covers and plots that keep you guessing before ripping you in half when you finally realise who the culprit is.
