Repeated elephant charges failed to break the resolve of the outnumbered Mughal soldiers. Too late to save the city, Akbar’s army let it go and stopped on the plains to the north, at Panipat. Seeing that the battle was on, Ahmad Shah positioned his 60 smooth-bore cannon and opened fire. The Second Battle of Panipat was fought between the forces of Samrat Hem Chandra Vikramaditya, popularly calledHemu, the Hindu king who was ruling North India from Delhi, and the army of Akbar, on November 5, 1556. This battle changed the course of politics in India for a long time through its significant events. In Second Battle of Panipat, on one side, there was the massive Army of last Hindu ruler in northern India, Samrat Hemu while other side had the small forces of Akbar led by his guardian and army commander Bairam Khan. It was a decisive victory for Akbar’s generals Khan Zaman I and Bairam Khan.
