Avary certainly uses a very stylized approach and yet manages to capture the flavor of Bret Easton Ellis' novel, which originally was set in 1985 in Bennington, VT. For those who like their humor served with a side of cynicism and twisted laughs to wash it down with, 'The Rules of Attraction' is for you. He attended the session anyway, but gave a rambling commentary that, to this day, has never been made public. You will leave this movie not knowing how to think, except that you hate each and every character (except the girl who sent Van Der Beek love letters). Make no mistake, this is horrible. I saw it four times and each time, I released the $8.00 freely. You just can't put in writing the biting tone that's captured so well in this great satire of relationships and society. But, people should see a movie because it's a movie and not because it's something comfortable or familiar or a blockbuster Hollywood coup. I was expecting just a normal film about rich kids on drugs but i got a piece of art blended in with college life. | I was rather surprised at some of the other comments that the film was trashy, vulgar and boring. The character is the brother of the notorious Patrick Bateman and has also appeared in Ellis's other novels, American Psycho, The Informers and Glamorama. Chronicling a year in a college populated by well-off children, the film focuses on four kids (Somerhalder, a poor man's Wes Bentley, Sossaman, the one decent thing in the movie, Van Der Beek and Biel, both in "my mom thinks I'm edgy" performances) who have little interest in anything outside of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Sean is a twenty-one-year-old student from a wealthy family. Paul is a young bisexual man who used to date Lauren. There are one or two characters that you might feel sorry for, but since their actions do not make sense, there is little point to them. Bret Easton Ellis is a genius. I thought the actors were all well cast and convincing. After viewing The Rules of Attraction, one can definitely see how Roger Avary and Quentin Tarantino were friends. Too bad he didn't use more of the time he devoted in this task to work on the script. Additional songs that are in the film are from the era in which the book takes place, including The Cure, Love and Rockets, Public Image Ltd., Blondie, The Go-Go's, Yazoo, and Erasure.
