I guess that’s why they don’t all sound the same. I sold my 1972 Martin D-28 which I later regretted. Hide Glue, VTS woods and vintage style thin fretboards. The 000 28 Modern Deluxe has the 1/4 plus all the other awesome features usually reserved for the Authentic or Custom Shop lines. It’s the right guitar for me all around. Will be dileverd Thursday. My suggestion is if anything you played with dead strings had any kind of promise I'd get the store to restring it (even if I had to cover the cost) and play that guitar again. I was looking at the D-18MD when I got a good deal on a Gruhn D-18 Sinker. You should expect to pay $4400. To measure that, I take a small white piece of paper and hold it carefully against the bridge plate, using my fingers to crease it against the front and back edges of the bridge plate. Instruments. HD's are D's on steroids with scalloped bracing. I ended up gushing............. You can tell by looking and feeling with the strings still in place, it is obvious if the top corners near the x have been shaved off. For strumming, the sound has tons of projection and sustain with nice overtones which never got to busy. I will probably never spend that kind of money again. Anyway let us know what you decide. Second, I thought the GE carve just took the top corners off the brace but on this, they obviously went back and also took those two edges off each side resulting in a nearly rounded top edge. Tried a d28, d18, hd35, d28md, gibson j200, d18md and was leaning towards the d18md even though the one i tried sounded a little "dead." Very dry and woodsy. J's are Hog not Rosewood I I believe, but you can get Rosewood and Walnut J's too. The neck is easy playing. I haven’t checked recently, but as of a couple of weeks ago they weren’t shown for sale on Martin’s website. I decided I would try to buy an older D-28 (pre-1970) but they are ridiculously expensive and many of them have condition issues. It is lighter that the standard version. I think of it as a fine guitar. Had the 000 42 in the cart to order but liked the features of the Modern Deluxe better and the 42 was a bit too blinged out for my tastes. To make a long story short I now own that D-18md and yes it is the most money I have ever spent on a guitar.
