Almost as soon as I started watching it, JUG FACE captivated me and became one of my favorite films of the summer. The half hour behind the scenes documentary is an insightful look at what made this little horror film a reality. The second little accident happened when I forgot to check the label before I added the colorants to the clay. Jug Face is now available on DVD and I sincerely recommend the shit outta it. "Jug Face" starts with one of those chasing-through-the-woods, near-date-rape type sequences, but Ada exercises a tad of free will and assents to the deed, which happens to take place near The Pit. GENRE: HORROR There’s some decent gore and lots of bloodshed, but the most effective bits of terror are when the pit is killing people, and we have no idea how. Then Ada’s interference in the annual ritual angers the pit and the audience is shown what the hole in the ground can really do. There is no simple line in the sand here where you can point to certain characters and say, “Oh, those are obviously the good characters,” while others are the “evil.” Every character has elements of good and evil within them. So the backstory with Jug Face is that once upon a midnight dreary, some settlers in the backwoods stumbled upon a pit in the ground and somehow decided that this pit would keep them safe and healthy if they performed ritual human sacrifice in it’s name, when the pit asked of course..  and how does a hole in the ground request human sacrifices in its name you might ask – well through backwoods shamans known as “potters” who make moonshine jugs in the likeness of those selected to die. In an insular rural moonshiners' community, a malevolent pit periodically demands the sacrifice of whoever's face appears on a jug. The answers to its big questions are revealed early on-murderous visions and messages from poor-quality CGI spirits quickly confirm the pit's cognizance, and that the cultists aren't quite as crazy as they seem-but these elements are only partially explained. Jug Face is a subtle little movie that doesn't really explain all that much about itself, but gives you just enough info here and there to hook you and keep you on the line. Ada’s brother and also baby daddy Jessaby, tells his Dad that he is sick and he needs to go have a wash in the pit to make himself better and his dad takes him out to the hole, and instead of being cured, the creature in the pit rips Jessaby apart. So Ada decides to protect her baby and of course doesn’t fess up to Dawai that she’s carrying around a likely genetic mutation and tells him to make a jug from memory and he rolls up the next day with a doughy jug face and well it’s curtains for Ada’s tubby husband to be. It doesn't have that 'Wow' moment that made We Are What We Are such a memorable film. Knowing that Dawai will be killed if she runs, she opts to instead stay and greets the dawn of a new day with a slit throat bleeding into the hole in the ground loved by her community.
