What it effectively expresses is the unease some people feel in a new relationship to fit expectations with that person’s family. For those who come to the film, as I did, without reading the book, it is unlikely you will truly understand the ending, or even the central hook. Jake tells his father that the young woman is a waitress and they met while she was serving him, in a scene reminiscent of a movie we saw the janitor watching earlier. The janitor cleans it up and goes to his car, where he begins to have memories o Jake and his parents. He then sees an animated pig being eaten by maggots, who beckons him to follow him. “It was the most vulnerable and exposing place to stand in but also the most liberating.”. Jake’s mother then starts cleaning, now a younger woman. An animated pig shows up and escorts the now-naked man to the "afterlife" through the school hallway. Jake’s father comes and finds her, and he’s now elderly. Throughout the two-minute teaser, confusion unfolds. Frustrated, she leaves the car and follows him, and in the trash outside sees hundreds of ice cream cups. The parents then ask her about her work in science – not painting. In the middle of a snow storm, they decide to stop for ice cream. When Buckley’s character meets the janitor and says she can barely remember meeting Jake, that he’s a mosquito from 40 years ago, this is reflective of reality.
